Glock 17 With 19 Slide - We often hear the word "adventure" associated with new products in the firearms world. However, the number of guns that actually change the firearms industry is very small.
When Glock introduced the G17, it literally changed everything we thought we knew about firearms. The company quickly followed up with its little brother, the Glock 19. There are subtle (and not so subtle) differences between the two weapons. In this post, we'll take a look at them and see how they stack up against each other.
Glock 17 With 19 Slide
Gaston Glock designed the Glock Model 17 in the early 80s to be a contender as the new 9mm service pistol of the Austrian military. It was not the first production gun to use a polymer frame (that honor goes to the H&K VP70), nor was it the first gun to use a trigger action. The genius of the Glock 17 is in how it takes those elements and combines them into a simple and convenient gun that is light and accurate.

The Model 19 was the third handgun made by Glock. (The Model 18 is a variant of the Model 17 designed for the Austrian anti-terrorist unit with the option for full fire). It takes all the functions and features of the Glock 17 and makes them a little smaller, which makes for a more compact gun that's easier to carry.
As mentioned, Glock originally designed the Model 17l for the Austrian military. Therefore, it means that it is carried out by the soldiers in the field. Its stability, rigidity and light weight make it an attractive option for people. But most shooters need a little more.
Over the years, Glock has updated the design of its guns. They add features like adjustable straps and thumb holes for a better grip, as well as adjustable back straps for a better fit in your hand. In the new Gen 5 models, they have also changed some of the internal engine. For our comparison, we looked at the Gen 4 Model 17 and Model 19. Both have proven to be accurate, reliable performers for civilians, military and law enforcement alike.
In your hand, there are few differences between the Glock 17 and the Glock 19. The guns feel essentially the same, although the Model 19 has a smaller grip.

The two guns are the same size (1.26 inches) and the same distance from the rear of the slide to the ejection port. Both the Gen 4 Model 17 and Model 19 feature replacement rear fenders, although the Model 17 rear fenders will not fit the Model 19, and vice versa. The Glock 19 in our photos is a custom Model 19. It has a rear magazine with a small extension near the slide, which is different from what the Model 17 uses.
The height of both shots is different. A standard Glock 17 magazine holds 17 rounds, while a standard Glock 19 magazine holds 15 rounds. At 5.47 inches, the Model 17 has a frame nearly half an inch longer than the Model 19's 5.04 inches. The Model 17 weighs 32.3 ounces loaded. The smaller model 19 weighs 23.6 ounces.
The barrel length and slide is where we see the biggest difference between the Glock 17 and the Glock 19. The Gen 4 Model 17 has a barrel length of 7.32 inches and a barrel length of 4.49 inches. The Glock 19 has a slide length of 6.85 inches and a barrel length of 4.02 inches.
Due to the different barrel and slide lengths, the springs are not interchangeable between the two. However, all fire control parts in the frame can be changed between the two guns.

The Glock 17 and Glock 19 were tested for accuracy using three common brands of 9mm ammunition:
Both guns were fired at a target that was 15 meters from the resting place. We tested for average velocity and average group size using the ProChrono Digital chronograph installed outside each gun. The temperature during the test was 85 degrees and did not stay at 85 percent.
The heavier Glock 17 feels more controlled under recoil than the Glock 19. However, both guns produced better results in our accuracy tests. The longer barrel of the Glock 17 allows more powder to be fired in the cartridges while still in the barrel tube. This resulted in a slightly higher muzzle velocity for the Glock 17 versus the Glock 19.
Since the first military use of the Glock 17, it has found a home in the holsters of law enforcement officers around the world. Weighing just over two pounds, it revolutionized what a service gun could be.

However, the Glock 17 was never meant to be concealed. The long frame of the model 17 means that the butt of the gun protrudes a bit under the cover. This makes it a challenge to keep up. However, in recent years, the increasing popularity of the accessory inside the waist (AIWB) has caused an increased interest in using the Glock 17 as a concealed weapon. The long and long shot is very comfortable to carry in that position.
With 15 rounds of 9mm in its magazine, a four-inch barrel, flexible trigger and compact size, the Glock 19 is one of the best pistols around for concealed carry. It's easy to keep on your waist, has a lot of accessories available, and has a reputation for reliability that many other guns on the market like to have.
However, the two extra rounds in the Glock 17 give the Glock 19 a slight edge in firepower.
It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a gun to protect your home, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better than the Glock 17. It is a gun that performs well in shooting competitions as well. For everyday underground carry, practice and training, the Glock 19 has always been the standard by which all other 9mm compact pistols are judged. Either way, you'll get a reliable, consistent speaker that's been a market leader for decades.
